Dr. Jasmeet Bains’ campaign for re-election to the 35th Assembly District announced the endorsements of State Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas and Speaker Emeritus Anthony Rendon today. The endorsements highlight Dr. Bains’ effectiveness in bringing home real results for the Valley and the achievements she will build upon in her second term in the Assembly.
Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas said: “Dr. Jasmeet Bains has dedicated her life to serving Central Valley families. In the Assembly, she has hit the ground running, delivering millions of dollars in investments in public safety, addressing fentanyl overdoses, improving Valley parks and recreational spaces, and expanding economic mobility through the Valley. Dr. Jasmeet Bains’ effective leadership on behalf of the Valley is desperately needed, and she is the clear choice for State Assembly District 35.”
Speaker Robert Rivas was first elected to the California State Assembly in 2018 and was elected Speaker of the Assembly in 2023. Raised in a farmworker community, Speaker Rivas overcame a stutter and became a community leader and legislator. In the Assembly, Speaker Rivas represents the 29th Assembly District which spans Monterey, San Benito, Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties. Speaker Rivas has championed affordable housing, workplace safety, education, and COVID-19 relief for farmworkers during his public service career.
Assembly Speaker Emeritus Anthony Rendon said: “I’m standing with Dr. Jasmeet Bains because she has proven to be an effective, results-driven leader for the Central Valley. Dr. Bains will never back down from fighting for the Valley’s fair share and has the results to back up her vision for all who call the Valley home. Speaker Emeritus Anthony Rendon, a Los Angeles native, was elected in 2012 and represents the 62nd Assembly District in Southeast Los Angeles County and served as Assembly Speaker from 2016 to 2023. During Rendon's tenure, California passed timely, balanced budgets, doubling the state rainy day fund, and investing $530 million in early childhood education. Under his leadership, critical legislation addressing the health and economic crises of the COVID-19 pandemic was passed, including legislation to support families and small businesses.
About Dr. Jasmeet Bains
The daughter of immigrant parents from India, Dr. Jasmeet Bains grew up in the Valley and watched her father build a business from the ground up, starting as an auto mechanic and ultimately owning successful car dealerships. Today, Dr. Bains is a family doctor providing primary healthcare as well as addiction treatment throughout the Valley and a champion for children, fighting to improve health outcomes for vulnerable communities while increasing opportunities for all. A political newcomer, Dr. Jasmeet Bains was first elected to represent the 35th Assembly District in 2022 by an overwhelming margin of victory, becoming the first Sikh American and woman of Indian American descent to be elected to the State Legislature.
The primary election will be held on March 5, 2024.
